First consultation

What a first consultation covers

Forty-five minutes, in person, by phone or on video. You leave knowing where you stand and what it would cost to act.

  1. 01

    Your story, uninterrupted

Ten minutes to tell it in your own words, with the documents you have to hand.

  2. 02

    Where you stand

A straight assessment of your position: what is strong, what is weak, and what we do not know yet.

  3. 03

    Your options

Every realistic path, including doing nothing, with the likely time and cost of each.

  4. 04

    A written plan

Within two working days: the steps, the order, the fee. You decide at home, not in the room.

Fees

How billing works

Three ways to pay, chosen per matter and agreed in writing before any work starts. No surprises on the invoice.

  • Fixed fee

    When

Matters with a known shape: wills, conveyancing, a contract review, a company set-up.

    You pay

One price for the whole job, quoted after the first consultation. If it takes us longer, that is on us.

    Simple will: $450

  • Hourly

    When

Matters where the other side decides the work: disputes, negotiations, litigation.

    You pay

A rate per hour, billed in six-minute units, with a monthly cap you set and an itemised invoice.

    Partner $380/h, associate $240/h

  • Retainer

    When

Businesses that need a lawyer on call: contracts, HR questions, the odd letter.

    You pay

A fixed monthly amount for an agreed number of hours. Unused hours roll over for one month.

    From $900/month

Client stories

How matters tend to go

Three recent matters, with the details changed. No names, no identifying facts.

  1. PropertyFixed fee

A boundary dispute settled in one letter

Two neighbours, a fence in the wrong place and ten years of resentment. One survey, one letter and a mediated afternoon later, both had a signed agreement and the fence moved before winter.

    Settled at mediation

  2. Small businessFixed fee

A shareholder exit without the courtroom

Two founders who no longer agreed on anything except that it should end. We valued the business with their accountant, drafted the buy-out and had it signed in six weeks.

    Buy-out signed in six weeks

  3. FamilyHourly, under the cap

Parenting arrangements that both parents signed

A separation with two children and two very different ideas of a week. Four meetings, a parenting plan both could live with, and no court date.

    Parenting plan agreed
